Eravamo a conoscenza del fatto che ben presto l'HTC S620, nuovissimo smartphone caratterizzato da un design estremamente sottile e da ampia tastiera QWERTY a vista (qui la recensione risalente allo scorso settembre), sarà affiancato nei primi mesi del 2007 da un modello esteticamente simile, ma superiore (anche nel prezzo) per specifiche tecniche.

| Thanks to an anonymous reader, here are the first shots of the Cavalier, a new smartphone from HTC. The form factor is very similar to the HTC S620 (codename Excalibur), but the device has higher specs and will have higher price too. Cavalier will not be the successor of the HTC S620, but a new model with advanced features (and more expensive...). |
Come appare evidente nell'immagine in alto, il form factor subisce solo piccole modifiche: le linee appaiono meno stondate, più nette. E se anche la tastiera sembra possedere un profilo ergonomico più deciso, lo spessore aumenta, sebbene di pochi millimetri. Evidentemente il nuovo modulo telefonico adottato, che aggiunge l'UMTS e l'HSDPA ai preesistenti protocolli GPRS/EDGE, è legato ad un chipset (una scheda madre) differente anche in termini di proporzioni.

Grazie al quadro delle caratteristiche appena riportato è più facile individuare le diversità sostanziali tra i due smartphone (entrambi "freschi di fabbrica", potrebbe dirsi). Innanzitutto la CPU: per non tradire le buone prestazioni offerte dall'Excalibur (S620), il costruttore ha preferito adottare nel Cavalier il più prestante processore Samsung da 400 MHz. Probabilmente la scelta è stata obbligata dall'implementazione del modulo 3G, che forse comporta un appesantimento del carico di lavoro per la piattaforma hardware. Questa ipotesi viene avvalorata dall'amperaggio della batteria, anche questo leggermente potenziato: 1050 mAh. | The manufacturer has chosen a faster processor than the S620 one; this choice is probably due to the higher demand of computing power of the UMTS/HSDPA. Consequently, the device should be more power-hungry, which explains why the battery also has been improved (from 960 to 1050 mAh). |
Infine una nota relativa all'espansione di memoria: in questo modello, a differenza del fratello minore, la microSD può essere inserita e disinserita senza dover estrarre la batteria. Lo slot, infatti, non è posizionato all'interno del vano SIM ma all'esterno, su di un fianco del device.
